Treadmill Stress Test Q & A
What is a treadmill stress test?
A treadmill stress test is a test used to measure your heart's response to activity. During the test, you'll be hooked to an EKG monitor using several electronic leads placed at different spots on your body. Then you'll be asked to walk on a treadmill, beginning at a slow pace and gradually increasing the pace and often the incline over time to see how your heart responds. Treadmill tests can help diagnose significant disease in about two-thirds of patients, more frequently in patients with substantial arterial blockage.
Why do I need a treadmill stress test?
Treadmill stress tests are used primarily to help your doctor monitor the blood flow to your heart during periods of increased activity, but they can also be used for other purposes such as:
- evaluating how effective your current heart medicines are in protecting your heart during exertion
- examining the function of your heart valves
- identifying abnormal heart rhythms
- monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of procedures that have been performed to improve heart health
- evaluate your risk for coronary artery disease
- determine safe levels of exercise
- identifying the need for further exams and tests
Are treadmill stress tests risky?
A treadmill stress test is no riskier than taking a jog around your neighborhood, and because trained medical staff is present, any issues that may arise – though rare – can be handled quickly and appropriately.
When will I get the results of my test?
The initial results of your test will usually be provided to you before you leave the office, but complete “official” results can take a couple of days to complete. These results will help determine your future course of treatment as well as the possible need order additional tests.
